Effect

What Is THCa?

THCa is short for tetrahydrocannabinolic acid. It is the acid form of THC. THCa is an inactive cannabinoid meaning it’s non-psychoactive. In its raw form, it will not get you high.  

Known as the “precursor” to THC, THCa is converted to THC when decarboxylated. Without THCa, THC simply wouldn’t exist. In fact fresh cannabis flower contains THCa, and very minimal amounts of THC, which is converted to THC when heated.

The two cannabinoids share a nearly identical molecular structure. The major difference is that THCa has one more carboxyl acid group than THC. This acid chain is what inhibits THCa from producing the intoxicating effects we commonly associate with cannabis. 

Are THCa Carts Legal?

Technically speaking, THCa cartridges are not considered a Schedule I drug and are therefore legal.This is largely due to the 2018 Farm Bill. 

Hemp products are legal as long as they meet the legislation’s definition of hemp. The 2018 Farm Bill categorizes hemp as legal if it contains a concentration of less than 0.3% Delta 9 THC on a dry weight basis. 

THCa is not explicitly mentioned in the bill’s categorization of hemp. So it remains a legal gray area. For the time being, current loopholes in the legislation allow for companies to create legal THCa products. 

Even though THCa isn’t considered an illegal Schedule 1 substance at the federal level, state laws can vary. States are allowed to outlaw THCa and other cannabinoids altogether. Be sure to check with your local laws before buying any hemp products.
